Bulldog Brew 11/20: One Win Away

Today, we need just one more victory to earn bowl eligibility.

Good morning! In honor of it being Thanksgiving Week, we’re giving thanks a little early this year—and boy did the Bulldogs make it easy for us this weekend. But we’re going with Taylor James’ game-winner on Friday night to send Mississippi State soccer to the Sweet 16 for the first time in program history.

🎥 EGG BOWL WEEK

You know what time it is. All this week, HailState+ will be highlighting some of the most iconic Egg Bowl matchups in series history.

Up today? A rollicking 31-13 victory in 1974 that helped propel the Bulldogs to a 9–3 record on the season.

🔼 Benchmark Performance. Freshman phenom Josh Hubbard continues wasting no time making memorable moments in Maroon and White, racking up 29 points off the bench to help the Bulldogs rally from a big early deficit and claim a 66-57 victory over Northwestern to win the Hall of Fame Tip-Off Tournament championship.

The rookie shot 9-of-14 from the field, including 4-for-8 from behind the 3-point line to power State offensively. With four straight double-digit scoring games, including a pair of 20-plus-point efforts in that stretch, Hubbard keeps showing he's not your average freshman.

🗣 Josh Hubbard: "My teammates trust me. We built a lot of chemistry over the summer. And we practice hard. We practice really hard. God blessed me with some ability, and we have a great coach who's a leader that knows how to lead us to wins."

📅 Mississippi State returns to action this Friday as they host Nicholls in a 1 p.m. contest at Humphrey Coliseum.

🔼 A Historic Season. After a hard-fought battle on the pitch, the most successful season in Mississippi State soccer history came to a close when the No. 2 Stanford Cardinal outlasted the Bulldogs by a score of 1-0 to place themselves in the Elite 8 of the 2023 NCAA Women's Soccer Tournament.

For the Bulldogs, the 2023 season is one to remember and will go down in the record books for Coach James Armstrong and his staff—before arriving in Starkville, State had only appeared in the NCAA Tournament one time. Now, the Bulldogs have enjoyed back-to-back trips that included hosting opportunities.

This season, MSU will end the year ranked for the first time as they were No.18 in the final United Soccer Coaches poll. State was one of two SEC squads to reach the Sweet 16 and will forever be a top-16 team in the books when the 2023 season has concluded.

🔼 One Win Away. Mississippi State football needs just one more victory this year to earn bowl eligibility after winning 41-20 against Southern Miss at Davis Wade Stadium.

Will Rogers and Jo'Quavious Marks made their anticipated returns from injury and helped fuel an MSU offense that racked up 382 total yards, led by a ground game that saw the Bulldogs run for 238 yards as a team—their second-highest single-game total this season—led by Jeffery Pittman's 98 yards and touchdown.

Defensively, the Bulldogs held the Golden Eagles to just 246 yards, in large part due to career days by several wearing Maroon and White—Nathaniel Watson became the first Bulldog in 23 years to have a 20-plus tackle game, tacking on a sack and a forced fumble, and Jett Johnson finished with 18 tackles, a sack, two tackles for loss, and an interception.

🥚 Mississippi State is set to wrap up the 2023 regular season with the annual Battle for the Golden Egg. MSU and its instate rival, Ole Miss, will play on Thanksgiving night—Thursday, November 23. The game kicks off at 6:30 p.m. CT and the game will be televised by ESPN.

🔼 Rogers That. Senior guard Darrione Rogers corralled a loose ball rebound and finished a second-chance putback in the final seconds of regulation that lifted Mississippi State women’s basketball ahead for the final time in a 63-62 road win over Belmont in the Curb Center yesterday.

With the win, Mississippi State earned its first road win and improved to 5-0 overall on the season. Mississippi State is also now 4-2 in contests decided by five points or less under head coach Sam Purcell.
