Bulldog Brew 8/11: Grit and Grind

Nate the Great, Big Time Addition, and much more!

Good morning! For this first time in six years, the Bulldogs are back at South Farm for football preseason camp. Leaving behind the glitz and glamour of the Seal Complex, State football let loose on the farm for a practice the way “football camp is supposed to be”.

What else did we throw into the Brew today?

📈 STOCK UP

🔼 Nate the Great. The Butkus Award goes to the best linebacker in college football each year, and one of those potential winners is none other than Nathaniel Watson. He was named to the watch list for the 39th annual award alongside 50 of the nation’s top players at the position.

By now, you know the stats:

  • 113 total tackles last season - a career high

  • 8.69 tackles per game last season - second in the SEC

  • 45 career games with 242 total tackles as a Bulldog

The finalists for the award will be announced on November 20th, and in his final season as the anchor of the State defense, who’s to say he won’t be one of them?

🔼 Swag Has Arrived. As the saying goes: look good, feel good, play good, and so is the case for Bulldog volleyball. The team received their gear for the season ahead of the season opener in two weeks.

🔼 HailState+ is heating up this fall with the premiere of a new weekly docuseries — This is Mississippi State — taking fans behind closed doors for an all-access look at Zach Arnett’s first season as head coach.

New episodes will be released weekly throughout the season giving you unprecedented access you won’t be able to find anywhere else. Think “Hard Knocks” but Bulldog football; an absolute must-watch for all State fans! If you missed it, no worries, you can still catch it for FREE! This one’s on us.

🔼 Top Scorer. Former Bulldog Ally Ewing is lighting up the golf course across the pond in the AIG Women’s Open. After round one of the tournament, she sits at the top of the leaderboard after carding five birdies and an eagle for a four-under par day. It’s going to be a tight race to the end as Ally holds just a one shot lead over five different players.

🔼 Big Time Addition. Bulldog softball is getting a good one. Lexi Sosa is headed to Starkville from UCLA where she was a career .357 hitter, had a career 1.58 ERA from the circle, and was a member of two WCWS teams. After not playing in 2023, Sosa will have two years of eligibility with the Bulldogs.

🗣️ “From the incredible academic and athletics staff to the astonishing legacy that this MSU program has built, I knew that being a Bulldog would not only equip me as an athlete, but I would be given the chance to become the best version of myself on and off the field.” - Lexi Sosa
