Bulldog Brew 7/10: Hoop Dreams

Trio Of former Bulldogs Set To Take On NBA Summer League

Good morning, Bulldogs! Come on now, you don’t want to be the only one not there, right?

Secure your spot NOW!

What else do we have brewing today?

🏀 Hoop Dreams
✍️ All New Coleman’s Corner
🐶 And much, much more!

Less than one week from today, Mississippi State head football coach Jeff Lebby, as well as players Blake Shapen, Isaac Smith and Brenen Thompson will be walking around the College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta and discussing the upcoming season as part of Southeastern Conference Media Days. It’s hard to believe it, but football season is truly just around the corner.

I confess, I can’t wait.

As I write this, I’m sitting in my office on campus and things are pretty quiet around here. That’s not unusual for the summer months. However, in a few weeks’ time, just outside my door, the Bulldogs will be back on the practice fields. Not long after, classes will start for the fall semester and a buzz will be back in Starkville. Saturdays at Davis Wade Stadium will be nearing.

Bring them on.

Through the years, we’ve all seen our ups and downs on college football weekends around here. We’ve rejoiced together. We’ve been disappointed together. We’ve laughed together.

I think that’s why I so enjoy every single college football season. We get to experience whatever comes as one big Maroon and White family.

Whether it’s the tailgating, the anticipation, the game itself, the breakdown of it all with your friends and family when it’s all over, or some combination of everything, it’s special. And you just never know when you’ll be at a game when something magical happens and you’ll forever be able to say, ‘I was there.’

Someone once told me in the press box, you only get so many football seasons in your lifetime. You better enjoy them all. That guy was onto something. So, I pass along the same message to you.

If you haven’t already, make sure you’re all set to join us at Davis Wade Stadium this season. There are multiple options to fit your needs. There are four packs, featuring four tickets and a parking pass for select games. There’s a mini plan, allowing you to choose one non-conference game and two SEC games. And of course, single-game and season tickets are also available. Get your tickets today online, or call 888-GO-DAWGS.

I’m looking forward to seeing you all for a game or two or all of them here shortly!

Hail State!

(Coleman’s Corner is brought to you each Thursday by Mississippi State athletics senior writer Joel Coleman. A 2007 and 2009 graduate of Mississippi State, Coleman has worked inside and around MSU sports for nearly two decades with prior stops also including the Starkville Daily News and Sports Illustrated.)

📈 STOCK UP

🔼 Hoop Dreams. While the summer is a time for some of us to unwind and relax, that’s not the case for a trio of former Bulldog hoopers chasing their dreams.

With the NBA Summer League kicking off, Tolu Smith (Pistons), Garrison Brooks (Pistons) and Cameron Matthews (Rockets) are all battling for reps and looking to make an impression on league execs over the next few weeks.

🔼 Instant Impact. We have 51 days until Mississippi State football’s season opener at Southern Miss on August 30!

Luke Work, who wears No. 51 for the Bulldogs, played in 11 games and made seven starts in 2024 during his true freshman season, including the final two games at right tackle.

🤔 BULLDOG TRIVIA

This weekend, the 2025 MLB Draft will get underway with the first round slated for Sunday in Atlanta.

Since 2012, Hail State has had 10 Bulldogs selected in the first round. Where does that rank nationally over that span?
