🔼 One Down. Day One of NCAA Regionals was one to remember for the Bulldogs. No. 18 Mississippi State men’s golf leads the field at the Morgan Hill Regional after yesterday’s first round—shooting 12-under 276 as a team. The Bulldogs are five strokes ahead of No. 7 Florida State with four Bulldog golfers in the top 10.

State's first-round team score is tied for the fifth-lowest first round in program history.

Both Pedro Cruz Silva and Hunter Logan sit in a tie for second place after they both carded 4-under 68’s on the day. With his 17th career round in the 60’s, Logan took sole possession of the fifth most rounds in the 60’s in program history.

Rounding out the group’s foursome of scorers on the day were Garrett Endicott and Ford Clegg who both shot two-under 70, sitting in a tie for ninth place. Endicott, with the day he had, tied for the third-most rounds of par or better in a single season with his 21st of the year.

“I thought we did a really good job handling the day and focusing on us,” said head coach Dusty Smith after the end of day one. “We need to make sure our focus remains on what we can control.” The Bulldogs and their five shot lead will head into the second of three days looking to expand the gap and run away with the region. Follow along to all the regional action here.

🔼 That Was Fresh, Man. After an impressive week at the plate, MSU’s very own David Mershon was named the SEC Co-Freshman of the Week. This past weekend, Mershon averaged .600 at the plate with an even better on-base percentage at .714. Rounding out his impressive weekend stats was his perfect 3/3 in stolen bases against the No. 2 ranked team in the country.

What really set him apart was Sunday’s game where he went 4-5 on the night with two walks and was the spark that gave the Bulldogs hope in both the sixth and seventh innings.

With the award, Mershon and the rest of MSU baseball will look to capitalize on the series win and close out the season strong with a game against North Alabama tonight at 6:00pm, and a regular season series finale against Texas A&M at home this weekend.

🔼 New To The Pitch. State’s soccer team just added a juggernaut to the back line. Let’s all make the warmest of welcomes to State’s newest women’s soccer player Ruthny Mathurin who joins us from the University of Louisiana. The transfer will have two years left of eligibility for the Bulldogs as a significant contributor to State’s defense.

The two-time All-Sun Belt selection joins the Bulldogs after two seasons where she accumulated seven goals and seven assists as a two-year starter. In her most recent season, she lead her team in goals scored and total points with 13. When away from collegiate soccer, Mathurin plays for the Haitian Women’s National Team where she will compete in this year’s Women’s World Cup. She helped Haiti make history as the first Haitian team to ever qualify for the event since the tournament’s inception.

“We are thrilled with the addition of Ruthny to our back line,” said head coach James Armstrong. Mathurin will join the team following her World Cup appearance, and will be ready to use her pro-level experience to put together some wins for the Bulldogs come next season.

🔼 Mr. Buckets. One of the nation’s top-25 scorers from last season is headed to Starkville to join head coach Chris Jans and the rest of the Bulldogs. Four-year standout Andrew Taylor is joining MSU from Marshall for his last year of eligibility.

Taylor, who clocks in at 6’3”, is a natural scorer, accumulating 1,609 total points in his four years on 43% shooting. Last season, the guard averaged 20.2 points per contest which led to All-Sun Belt First-Team and NABC All-District 23 First-Team selections. He was the only player in the country last season to average 20 points, 4.5 assists, 4.5 rebounds, and 2.0 steals per game. A stat sheet stuffer in the all the best ways.

“Andrew amassed quite the resume during his four years at Marshall,” said Coach Jans. “He will add a scoring punch and believe he will influence our team winning basketball games next season.” Adding scorers to a team never hurts, and Taylor is one heck of an addition for these Bulldogs.

🤔 BULLDOG TRIVIA

Oh So Close. Freshman David Mershon had himself a career-best series this past weekend, and put up some other-worldly numbers over the three-game stretch including his four hits in five plate appearances in Sunday’s game. He came just short of a couple of all-time records this weekend that would have put him in the books next to some Bulldog baseball greats.

Our question today — do you know what the MSU record is for hits recorded in a single game?

🎉 TRIVIA ANSWER

Answer: Six!

The feat has been accomplished five times in State’s history, and was most recently done in 2013 by Adam Frazier. Mershon still has a few more seasons to go for the all-time record, but man was he close this past weekend.

Have a great Tuesday, y'all.
