Postseason runs are often built on the backs of unlikely heroes. Sure, stars usually find a way to shine when the lights are the brightest, but so many times they get that opportunity because someone you might not have predicted comes through with a legendary game or moment.

We’ll see where Mississippi State’s 2025 baseball season ultimately ends up. But as the Bulldogs get set to begin a three-game series at Missouri tonight with the goal of solidifying an NCAA Tournament-worthy resume, one of the main reasons State is in position to possibly punch a postseason ticket is Evan Siary.

It’s been five days now since Siary delivered a pitching performance of a lifetime last Saturday at Dudy Noble Field against rival Ole Miss. However, Siary’s showing is deserving of continued praise as without it, MSU would likely be in a much different scenario in this final weekend of regular season action.

If you believe college baseball experts’ predictions, State is on track to be in an NCAA Regional in a couple of weeks. That means it seems the Dawgs are battling the Tigers this weekend looking to simply play good ball, win some games and maintain or improve their current status. It appears State’s destiny is fully in its own hands.

Again, that fortunate position comes in large part because of Siary’s stellar effort versus Ole Miss. It’s still almost unbelievable how well Siary pitched.

Eight scoreless innings. An astounding 15 strikeouts. He’d never before struck out more than six in a game in his previous 36 career outings as a Bulldog. It was remarkable.

Siary’s strikeout total was the highest for any pitcher in SEC play this season. The effort earned him both the SEC Pitcher of the Week honor, as well as the Golden Spikes Player of the Week award.

State of course won Siary’s start 4-1. But you can argue that by saving arms in the MSU bullpen, Siary actually won the Diamond Dawgs TWO games last weekend with his dominance, giving MSU a series win over the Rebels and putting NCAA Tourney baseball within reach.

“It was just such a special outing,” interim head coach Justin Parker said. “He’s probably our hardest worker. I didn’t even realize he had 15 strikeouts until someone told me in the dugout. He had all four pitches working. He commanded all four pitches and had strikeouts on all four pitches – a lot on the fastball, several on the curveball.”

Said Siary: “[For me] it was just stay focused, keep going, trust the guy next to me and do whatever it takes to win the ball game.”

Whatever it takes. That’s the kind of attitude that has resuscitated this State season after a 7-14 start to league play made things look dire.

Speaking of that mindset, do you want to know what Siary did only a few minutes after making Rebel hitters look silly? He didn’t kick his feet up. He didn’t take a deserved rest. He instead joined several of his teammates postgame and helped pull the tarp over the infield at The Dude to protect it against expected rainfall. Whatever it takes, right?

What a guy. What a group.

Hopefully a successful upcoming weekend and a fun few weeks are in store for them and for all of us.

Hail State!
