Bulldog Brew 5/1: Super Bulldog Weekend

Get ready for a great weekend of home Bulldog events!

What else do we have brewing today?

🐶 And much, much more!

If you haven’t already made plans to be in Starkville this weekend, what are you waiting for?

A special few days await at Mississippi State. Super Bulldog Weekend is here, and with the importance of the events taking place on campus, it’ll be a super few days indeed. Let’s take a quick look at what’s happening in Stark Vegas starting today.

Rivalry Softball

If Mississippi State and rival Ole Miss just played checkers it’d be intense. Well, just imagine how much electricity will be in the atmosphere starting today when the Bulldogs and Rebels begin a three-game series at Nusz Park with postseason implications.

It’s the first time ever the two programs have met as ranked foes as Ole Miss enters ranked No. 17 while MSU is right behind the Rebels at No. 18. Add to that, both squads are currently on the bubble when it comes to hosting an NCAA Regional and whoever wins the series this weekend will at the very least better their chances of playing NCAA Tournament games on their respective home fields.

Seems safe to say this is one softball series you don’t want to miss. The Dawgs and Rebels begin the weekend’s action tonight at 6 p.m. The series continues with a 4 p.m. Friday game before wrapping up with a 5 p.m. contest on Saturday.

If you can’t make it out to Nusz Park, the first two games of the series will be streamed on SEC Network+. The series finale will be televised on SEC Network.

Postseason Tennis

MSU men’s tennis continues to be among the most consistently successful programs in the country, and the Bulldogs have a great chance to add to all their recent accolades at home this weekend.

State is hosting the first and second rounds of the NCAA Men’s Tennis Championships starting on Friday. It’s MSU’s 14th straight NCAA Tournament appearance and the Dawgs have reached at least the Round of 16 in five of their last six NCAA bids, including last season.

A couple of wins at home in the coming days would get the Dawgs right back in the Sweet 16. You can help push them there.

State faces New Orleans at 1 p.m. on Friday. Should the Bulldogs win, they’ll battle either Michigan State or North Alabama at 1 p.m. on Saturday with a trip to the Round of 16 on the line.

Determination At Dudy Noble

Mississippi State baseball players Bryce Chance and Noah Sullivan made it clear following MSU’s 18-5 win over Memphis on Tuesday: the Bulldogs are determined to make a late-season run and find their way into the postseason.

For State to do just that, it begins this weekend with a huge home series against Kentucky. If Tuesday’s run-rule victory was any indication, there is still plenty of bite left in these Bulldogs. They’ll try to show it at 6 p.m. on Friday, 2 p.m. on Saturday and noon on Sunday.

The Friday and Saturday games will be streamed on SEC Network+ while the Sunday game will be televised by SEC Network.

One Final Tune Up

MSU track and field will also be in action on campus this weekend, and it’s a perfect opportunity to see the Bulldogs as they close out the regular season and look ahead to the SEC Outdoor Championships.

The Maroon and White Tune Up begins today and continues tomorrow. Admission to the action is free.

(Coleman’s Corner is brought to you each Thursday by Mississippi State athletics senior writer Joel Coleman. A 2007 and 2009 graduate of Mississippi State, Coleman has worked inside and around MSU sports for nearly two decades with prior stops also including the Starkville Daily News and Sports Illustrated.)

📈 STOCK UP

🔼 Closing Time. No. 18 Mississippi State softball closes out the regular season at home this weekend with a top-20 matchup against No. 17 Ole Miss. One game separates the Bulldogs (11-10) and the Rebels (10-11) in the SEC standings heading into the final three-game series before the SEC Tournament.

🔼 Top Talent. After being presented with one of 12 Golden Tickets for the AUSL College Draft on Tuesday night, Mississippi State's Sierra Sacco was named one of the Top 25 Finalists for the USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year Award on Wednesday.

🔼 Running Home. Mississippi State track and field competes for the final time this weekend before the SEC Championships, hosting the Maroon and White Tune Up today and tomorrow at the Mike Sanders Track Complex.
