Bulldog Brew 3/4: Long Time Coming

Today, the Diamond Dawgs earn a weekend sweep at The Dude and a women’s basketball recap

Good morning! State’s former players at the NFL Combine showed out all weekend long, but one former Bulldog stood out above anyone else in his class. Cornerback Decamerion Richardson scored the highest of any DB in Indianapolis with an athleticism score of 88 thanks in part to his 4.34s 40-yard dash. That draft stock must be rising!

🔼 How Sweep It Is. The Diamond Dawgs earned the weekend series sweep over Mount St. Mary's following two victories in the doubleheader on Saturday. The Bulldogs took game one, 7-2, before earning the sweep in game three, 6-0. The shutout in the second game of the doubleheader was the Dawgs’ first shutout since 2021. The sweep improved State to 8-4 on the season. David Mershon shined with seven hits and three RBI and is hitting .500 at the plate in seven starts this season. In game three, Jurrangelo Cjintje put in a career-high 6.2 innings of work on the mound and struck out a career-best 10 batters while reaching an impressive 97 mph.

🔼 Conference Clash. The No. 26 Bulldog men’s tennis team started SEC play strong with a 4-3 victory over 43rd-ranked Georgia. Playing on its home court, the Bulldogs won the early doubles point and also three of the first five singles matches to clinch their first league triumph of the year. Michal Novansky returned to the court for the first time since the 2023 SEC Championships to secure the doubles point for his team. Petar Jovanovic, Carles Hernandez and Benito Sanchez Martinez each took home their singles matches to earn State its eventual win.

🔼 Senior Send Off. In the final game of the regular season, Bulldog women’s basketball honored its seniors well by shooting 55% from the field and putting up 90 points in the win over Missouri. Jerkaila Jordan helped push State to a win behind her 18-point third quarter, tying a record for the most points scored in a single quarter. Senior guard Darrione Rogers recorded 22 points of her own behind a 6-8 performance for three with a team-high eight rebounds while graduate student guard Lauren Park-Lane dished out a team-high nine assists with 15 points.

Mississippi State will be the No. 8 seed and face No. 9 seed Texas A&M in the Second Round of the SEC Women's Basketball Tournament on March 7 at 11 a.m. CT in Greenville, SC.

🔼 Closing Time. State men’s basketball trimmed its 17-point halftime deficit down to eight points early in the second half, however, MSU got no closer and fell to Auburn, 78-63. Josh Hubbard led State with 23 points and excelled from long range, making six of his 11 three-point attempts. Hubbard has now scored 89 points over his last three contests. Big man, Tolu Smith III, scored 14 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for his seventh double-double of the season. Entering this week, State will play its final two SEC regular games of the season. On Wednesday, the Bulldogs will hit the road to face off against Texas A&M, and on Saturday, will play South Carolina at The Hump.

🔼 Six Games, Six Wins. Mississippi State softball had a dominant showing at the Bulldog Invitational presented by C Spire. State came away with six wins over the weekend, five of which came by run-rule. The tournament saw the Bulldogs outscored teams, 65-7, while slugging 22 extra-base hits. The No. 24 ranked State softball team will open up conference play next week on the road with a 17-3 record against in-state rival, Ole Miss.

🗣️ "This season is a grind, but we know every game is important, and we try to treat each one that way. We did a really great job at staying locked in, going game-by-game and playing our game. We were able to keep our focus on what was going on in our dugout and also continued to learn lessons as we get close to setting ourselves up in SEC play." - head coach Samantha Ricketts
