Bulldog Brew 2/2: Leader of the Pack

Today, a women’s basketball recap and White is headed to the pros

Good morning! The Bulldogs have already knocked off two top-10 reams within the SEC nearly halfway through conference play. They are just one of two teams to accomplish that feat within the conference, and one of six teams in the nation to record two AP Top 10 wins.

What else did we throw into today’s Bulldog Brew?

🔼 Bonus Basketball. Bulldog women’s basketball standout Jessika Carter turned in her 13th career 20-plus point and 10-plus rebound performance and 37th career double-double to lead Mississippi State over Kentucky in overtime 77-73 on the road. With the win, State improved to 18-5 overall and 5-3 in the SEC. Debreasha Powe had a solid performance after tallying 16 points and swiping three steals. After forcing overtime, the Bulldogs edged out the win by outscoring the Wildcats 11-8. Mississippi State remains on the road and will travel to play Texas A&M on Sunday at 2:00 p.m.

🔼 Representing Her Homeland. Earlier this week, Bulldog soccer’s Ilana Izquierdo was selected to join the Colombia Women’s National Team. The State midfielder will represent her country for the first microcycle of 2024.

🗣️ “So deserved. Everything Ilana does is top class and she loves representing her country. She will represent our program with class.” - head coach James Armstrong

🔼 Going Pro. Soccer Dawg standout Kennedy White is continuing her journey within the sport after signing with Gyori ETO FC, the Hungarian soccer club. The forward was an instrumental piece of the team’s historic 2023 run, and was named to the prestigious Hermann Trophy Watch List — the first time a Bulldog has been nominated for the award. White will go down in the State soccer record book as she secured the integral equalizer in the NCAA Tournament Round of 32 vs. No. 14 Brown before ultimately assisting on the game-winning goal that advanced State to the Sweet 16 for the first time in program history.

🔼 Leader of the Pack. The annual meeting of the Southeastern Conference Football Leadership Council is this weekend, and Tupelo, Mississippi, native Hayes Hammond will be there to represent the Bulldogs. The long snapper will be one of 13 other SEC players in attendance to meet with SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey, SEC Chief Medical Advisor Dr. Katie O’Neal, and others to talk about the rules of the game, student-athlete/referee interaction, and engagement opportunities.

🔼 Road Ball. Bulldog men’s tennis is hitting the road for the first time this season to square off against Middle Tennessee. The No. 22 ranked squad is facing off against the Blue Raiders who they played twice last spring, including once in the second round of the NCAA Championships where the Bulldogs came out on top. State leads the overall series against MTSU 21-2 and has won six straight, and both teams come in with a 4-2 record early on in the season.

🔼 The Golfer Down Under. Mississippi State men’s golfer Hunter Logan is competing across the world in the Vic Open as part of the PGA Tour Australia. Logan, who is playing as an amateur, finished his first round with a solid 3-under par round that saw him hole five birdies. In round two, Logan stayed steady and carded a one-over par 73 to finish his first two rounds at 2-under par for the tournament.
