🎙️ DEAR OL’ STATE
Dear Ol’ State: Chatting With The CSP Staff. On World Mental Health Day, it's a special edition of Dear Ol' State. Joel Coleman visits with three members of Mississippi State's Counseling and Sport Psychology staff – Dr. Allison Rogers, Dr. Quincy Davis and Brett Weaver. The trio discusses the vital role the CSP department plays in helping Bulldog athletes both in competition and away from it.
📈 STOCK UP
🔼 Comeback Dawgs. A pair of second half goals propelled No. 4 Mississippi State to a 2-1 victory over Georgia in Athens, improving their overall record to 11-1-0 and maintaining an ever-important 5-0-0 mark in SEC play. After being down 1-0 nothing at halftime, the Bulldogs came back with a pair of goals from Aitana Martinez-Montoya in the 53rd minute and a strike from Ilana Izquierdo in the 85th minute to secure the victory for State. The win makes the 2024 squad tied for the longest win streak in program history and the longest unbeaten streak, both at eight games.
🔼 Some Big Stages. The SEC announced both Mississippi State men’s and women's basketball’s national television broadcasts in 2024-25.
🏀 Seven of the eight televised games for Bulldog women’s basketball will be in conference action. The lone non-conference game to be televised will aired on ACC Network when the Bulldogs travel to face Georgia Tech in the 2024 SEC/ACC Challenge on Dec. 4. State will play seven conference games on SEC Network, starting with the reigning National Champions South Carolina inside Humphrey Coliseum on Jan. 5.
🏀 In only 25 days, the Bulldog men’s basketball team will face West Georgia on SEC Network+ during their 2024-25 season opener at Humphrey Coliseum and officially embark on the program's third season under Chris Jans. State welcomes Pittsburgh (Dec. 4 – 8:15 p.m. – SEC Network) to Humphrey Coliseum for the SEC/ACC Challenge. The Bulldogs also travel to SMU (Nov. 22 at 7:30 p.m. on ACC Network+) and Memphis (Dec. 21) to begin a pair of home-and-home series that feature return games to Humphrey Coliseum in 2025-26.
🔼 Starting Strong. On the opening day of the ITA Southern Regional Championships, Bulldog women’s tennis’ Athina Pitta picked up a pair of straight-set wins to earn a spot in the 64-player singles draw. The Bulldogs will have eight players in action on Friday beginning with the doubles main draw. Pitta joins forces with fellow sophomore Jayna Clemens to take on a duo from North Alabama while freshman Emma Cohen and Gianna Oboniye pair up to face off against Tulane at 9:45 a.m. Two MSU tandems, Chiara Di Genova and Maria Rizzolo along with Alessia Tagliente and Carolina Troiano, received opening round byes and await their second round opponents at 10:30 a.m.
🔼 Beyond The Gridiron. There are few aspects of sports as mental as being a kicker on the football field. Nick Barr-Mira lives this. Barr-Mira was a psychology major at UCLA. Now, in his second year at Mississippi State, he is participating in the BELI (Bulldog Experiential Learning Internship) internship, working with the CSP (Counseling and Sport Psychology) department. In addition to being valuable for a professional career, he found his studies in psychology to be beneficial to his football career.
🗣️ "Psychology came to my attention. The more I got into it, the more I realized that it's applicable to life. Understanding how people work and how our brains work is key to human interaction, which is something you're going to be doing in most of your jobs." - Nick Barr-Mira
